How to Combine Vitamin C in a Korean Skincare Routine.

Ingredients to mix it with and mistakes to avoid.

Today we are talking about Vitamin C and the ingredients you can combine it with to boost your Korean skincare routine. In fact, these simple rules can be particularly useful in this period, when you need to support your skin in the change of season before the winter months.

At the end of summer it can happen that we find our complexion is not as relaxed and glowing as we would like. Often this is due to the fact that during the summer the skin barrier was definitely weakened due to a more active and often not too regular lifestyle.  And it is precisely now that vitamin C can come to our aid.

Vitamin C: Properties for the Skin.

Vitamin C is a key antioxidant for youthful, firm, radiant and even-toned skin.

In fact, when used alone, Vitamin C

Stimulates collagen formation and reduces wrinkles.
Improves skin elasticity.
Neutralises the action of free radicals such as UV rays and pollution.
Prevents and fights spots.

The General Rules. Vitamin C: Always, Sometimes, Never.

What ingredients can Vitamin C be combined with? And what positive effects or negative consequences do you risk?

But before we start, the most important rule.

LISTEN TO YOUR SKIN!

Each skin has unique characteristics. Make sure you only ever give it what it really needs.

Vitamin C is an antioxidant with a slightly acidic pH value. But even though it is good for the skin, Vitamin C only works best with certain ingredients. Particularly those with sensitive skin should take extra care when mixing it. So what ingredients should I combine Vitamin C with? How can I maximise its contribution in my Korean skincare routine? And most importantly, what are the ingredients not to mix Vitamin C with to avoid nasty surprises and harmful effects on the skin?

Vitamin C + SPF

ALWAYS

We all know how important sun protection is.

Vitamin C can amplify the effect by neutralising free radicals from the sun’s rays that penetrate the SPF.

Apply your daily sunscreen on Vitamin C.

Vitamin C + Niacinamide

ALWAYS

Anyone who says that these two ingredients should not be mixed is probably unaware of the latest research in the field of dermatology, which claims that, in general, layering or combining products containing both of these ingredients is no longer taboo.

WARNING:
SENSITIVE SKIN: Avoid unwanted redness by using these two ingredients in two different routines.

Vitamin C + Vitamin E

ALWAYS

Combining these two important vitamins boosts the action of Vitamin C and helps correct light damage when applied in addition to sunscreen.

Vitamin C + Retinol

SOMETIMES YES

This mix stabilises Retinol and increases its effectiveness. If the skin tolerates it without unexpected irritation then they can be used in the same routine, but always in addition to sunscreen.

Sensitive skin? Then use Vitamin C in the morning and Retinol in the evening.

Super sensitive skin? Then it’s best to alternate them with a one-day interval.

Vitamin C + AHA

SOMETIMES YES

Both ingredients have a more or less similar acid pH, which makes them easy to complement and combine.

Sensitive skin? Both ingredients can be irritating, but it’s best to split them up: Vitamin C during the day and AHA at night.

Benzoyl Peroxide + Vitamin C

NEVER

Benzoyl Peroxide treats acne by oxidation, eliminating the bacteria that generate it. Vitamin C is an antioxidant. Combining them reduces the effectiveness of both, as well as generating potential irritation and dryness.

WARNING: it is better to separate them, using them in different routines or, better still, on different days.
