SEASON STORY: Water-based Cleansers.

Water: Deep Cleaning.

Our journey in the realm of Double Cleansing continues. This is the first important macro step of the Korean Beauty Routine and of our Autumn BeautyRoutine, faithful to the mantra Cleanse, Exfoliate, Hydrate. The reason is simple: a well-cleaned skin will be better prepared to accept the products provided by the next steps of the ritual, for even more visible results.

Basically, Double Cleansing consists in washing your face twice: first with an oil-based cleanser and then with a water-based cleanser. This is because in nature there are two large groups of substances. The hydrophobic ones, which dissolve with oil, and the hydrophilic ones, which dissolve in water. If we think about it, in fact, every day different types of debris are deposited on the skin: sweat, makeup, sunscreen. Items that have a different consistency and can be removed from water or oil. So Double Cleansing gives us the confidence that our skin is healthy, free from these annoying debris and that our pores are always clean,

Last week we talked about Detergent Oils, Balsams and Sticks: three different categories of oil-based detergents, and we explored their dos and don’ts.

This week it’s finally time to talk about the water-based detergents Foam and Gel, committed to get rid of water-soluble debris like sweat and dust. Again, as with Oily Detergents, Balsams and Stick, the aim is the same. Only the specific application of each product changes, which may meet particular needs of our skin.

Foaming Cleansers.

Foam-based cleaners are water-based cleaners with a foaming consistency. They are usually recommended for greasy, acne-prone skin types, because they are designed to thoroughly cleanse the skin by eliminating excess oil and sebum, releasing the pores from debris to keep the skin clean and refreshed.

Gel Cleansers.

On the other hand, this class of detergent tends to have a gel-like consistency and is typically designed for deep cleaning. Gel cleaners have a completely different texture from the light, airy texture of a traditional foam cleaner. Instead, they have a thick consistency of gel that generates less foam and provides a more gentle cleaning.

How to Choose.

Even if gel cleansers’ feeling is more delicate, we don’t mean that they are weak. Quite the contrary indeed, it just means that they clean respect the skin. In general, gel cleaners are recommended for sensitive skin type but, as usual, it all depends on how the skin reacts to different formulations.

WATCH OUT: It must be said that the association between the shape of the cleanser and the type of skin, is only a generalization in principle. Actually, we won’t end up repeating it often enough, every skin is a world of its own. This means that when choosing between foam or gel cleansers, it is necessary to take into account the different skin problems and, even more, the ingredients of each product. Only in this way can we be sure to make the choice that best suits our skin and rewards our routine with a top notch glow.
